Research in the Institute of Musicology and Arts

The Institute of Musicology and the Arts (IMA) at the 8xav福利导航 of Luxembourg conducts innovative research at the intersection of music education, music performance, and musicology. Building on its longstanding commitment to Luxembourg’s musical heritage, the institute explores topics such as embodied music pedagogy, musical creativity, educational technology, musician-instrument interaction, and well-being through music. Through funded research projects and international collaborations, IMA contributes to advancing music research and shaping the future of music learning and performance.

At present, the Institute pursues two main research tracks: A first track focuses on the valorisation of Luxembourg’s musical heritage, conducting research on Luxembourgish music and musicians. A second track focuses on (Early Childhood) Music Education, conducting research on embodied and digitized learning.

    Between Musical Heritage and Music Education

    Since the beginning of musicological research at the 8xav福利导航 of Luxembourg, the members of the Institute have carried out research to promote Luxembourg’s musical heritage with a focus on the following aspects:

    a. the critical edition of the works of the Luxembourgish composer Laurent Menager,
    b. the “Luxemburger Musikerlexikon” and
    c. conferences on music pedagogy in Luxembourg.

    A second research strand focuses on (Early Childhood) Music Education, addressing the following elements:

    a. Instrumental music teaching and learning in Early Childhood: the role of movement, and
    b. Digitization in (Early Childhood) Music education: interactive technologies, Augmented Reality (AR).

    The topics of the completed and ongoing doctoral theses were/are related to the research of the Institute, and include music philology (publishing), music education and additionally wind music from a sociological and historical point of view.

    • Abstract

      The project investigates the role of movement when learning to play an instrument in the early years (5-7 years old). The research involves studies with teachers (e.g., probing the beliefs on learning to play an instrument in the early years; probing how teachers consider and use movement in instrumental music learning) and children (e.g., longitudinal classroom study).

    • Abstract

      Laurent Menager (1835-1902) was a renowned composer, conductor, organist and teacher in Luxembourg in the 19th century, so much so that he can be considered one of the country’s national composers. He composed a large number of sacred and secular vocal works, instrumental works (chamber music, symphony orchestra, wind orchestra), scenic works and educational works which reflect very well the socio-cultural and musical situation of the country at that time. As most of his oeuvre is unpublished, this project will make accessible to an informed public, but also to a wide audience (performers, music lovers, musicologists) little known or even unknown compositions of the national and international musical heritage, while respecting the current scientific standards of a critical edition.

    • Abstract

      In parallel to the Menager edition (see above), the musicologists of the 8xav福利导航 of Luxembourg are conducting research on the history of Luxembourg music in general. This work has been presented in a first volume of the “Luxemburger Musikerlexikon:Komponisten und Interpreten, Band 1: 1815-1950”, a lexicon of Luxembourg musicians in three volumes. The first volume, which has already appeared in its second edition and has been very successful, contains detailed articles by 175 personalities on 250 pages. The second volume will cover Luxembourg composers and performers born after 1914, and the third volume the new generation born after 1960.
