Course learning outcomes
- Discuss methodological issues and the significance of research on the effectiveness of psychological interventions in recent years.
- Explain the main paradigms in psychological interventions (psychoanalysis, client-centred approaches, humanistic approaches, cognitive-behavioural approaches) and discuss the research on the effectiveness of these approaches.
- Discuss the risks and benefits in the theoretical integration of eclecticism.
- Describe and give examples of psychological interventions in the areas of work- and organizational psychology, school psychology, clinical psychology and health psychology.
-
Description
With sometimes complicated and inconsistent results, research on the efficacy and effectiveness of various forms of psychological interventions has been conducted for many decades. The evaluation of the effects of psychological interventions has grown in significance, as health insurance companies impose increased demands for accountability. There are differences between the way that interventions have been examined in experimental settings and the way that they are actually practiced by psychologists and clinicians. Randomized clinical trials employ treatment manuals that specify what experimenters are to do when applying given interventions to research participants. Although this practice enhances the internal validity of intervention research, the contrast with therapy as practiced, which allows for adjustments depending on the needs of the individual, limits the external validity of such research. There are also large differences in the basic assumptions that form the foundations for the main intervention approaches. This lecture gives an overview of these approaches (e.g. psychoanalysis, humanistic approaches, cognitive-behaviour therapy), discusses research findings on their efficacy and effectiveness, and highlights applications from a variety of areas but with a focus on clinical psychology. -

Course learning outcomes
- Gain knowledge about the wide field of e-mental-health methods
- Learn how these methods are applied in the psychotherapeutic process
- Gain an understanding of how e-mental-health treatment programs work
- Learn strategies for selecting appropriate treatment programs
-
Description
In this course we will highlight new developments, i.e., the use of e-mental-health, in the diagnostic process as well as the treatment of mental disorders. The uprise of the application of digital methods in clinical psychology provides new possibilities that can be applied in the entire psychotherapeutic process: We can use e-mental-health methods, e.g. electronic diaries, to assess subjective and objective measures in order to shed light on how symptoms unfold where they actually occur – in patients’ everyday lives; we can also use e-mental-health methods for example in the form of an (unguided) online intervention to overcome obstacles such as a shortage of psychotherapists and long waiting lists. The course will cover various aspects of e-mental-health methods, with a main focus on new possibilities for the diagnostic procedure and the treatment of various mental disorders. This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge about these new methods (such as electronic diaries, online treatments, AI in psychotherapy, virtual and augmented reality).
I will start by giving an overview over the field of e-mental-health and its possible applications. Then small groups of students will chose a topic of e-mental-health that they are interested in and will give an overview of it in the course (e.g., “using electronic diaries to examine the symptoms of depression in patients’ everyday lives” or “how is virtual reality implemented in the treatment of specific phobias”).
By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of e-mental-health applications, possible applications, their pros and cons, and how to choose among the myriad of available programs and apps.

-
Description
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to public mental health, grounded in the understanding of mental health promotion, prevention, and rehabilitation outlined by leading international frameworks. Drawing on the WHO Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013–2030, the WHO World Mental Health Report (2022), and recent global policy recommendations, the course examines how evidence-based interventions can strengthen mental well-being across populations and reduce the burden associated with mental health conditions.
Students will explore the full spectrum of mental health action: promotion strategies that build resilience and supportive environments; primary and secondary prevention approaches that reduce risk factors, identify emerging problems early, and intervene promptly; and rehabilitation and recovery-oriented practices that empower individuals to regain autonomy, social functioning and meaningful participation in their communities. Particular emphasis is placed on the shift towards community-based, person-centred, and rights-based mental health systems, in line with WHO guidance.
The course further integrates contemporary developments such as digital mental health tools, stepped-care models, community empowerment approaches, and cross-sector collaboration. Through critical analysis of research evidence, international guidelines and real-world examples, students will gain a nuanced understanding of the determinants of mental health, the design and evaluation of public mental health interventions, and the policies required to build equitable and responsive mental health systems.
By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the conceptual and practical foundations necessary to contribute to mental health promotion, prevention and rehabilitation within diverse community and clinical settings.

Description
Thanks to the spread of media technologies, media psychology has developed into an important field of research, which have increasingly become an integral part of all areas of life. The aim of this seminar is (a) to familiarise students with various theories of media psychology, (b) to provide them with an overview of key areas of applied media psychology, and (c) to analyse the application of psychological theories to the various effects of media on human emotions, cognition and behaviour. The course begins with a general introduction to media psychology (e.g. media psychology approaches, media communication, media use and media effects). In groups of two, students will then present their work on selected topics in the field of media psychology such as developments in media theory, developmental issues in media psychology, advertising, media representations of social groups (e.g., gender, ethnicity), excessive and pathological media use, and video games and interactive, especially social media. Finally, student groups write a report on their respective topics. -

Description
