Security Protocols and Threat Models – Security and Privacy via The Applied π-Calculus

Protocols connect the many devices used in our personal and professional lives. Hence we require
assurances that they are secure in the face of threats. Security is too important to leave to intuition and experience alone. We need methodologies to precisely determine our security goals. A security property is one that holds despite the best efforts of an attacker, as captured by a threat model. When attacking a protocol, an eavesdropper may
inject messages leading to sessions being hijacked and other data breaches. This textbook goes from intuition, to theory, to tools, explaining different security properties. Ubiquitous protocols keep the discussion real: ePassport protocols used at border checkpoints; the EMV protocol for contactless payments; and Open ID Connect used to sign in to websites. Even threats enabling car theft via relay attacks are taken into consideration by authenticating proximity. The book also analyses threats to privacy such as tracking, mitigated by making sessions unlinkable.

Spotlight on Young Researchers – Making seawater drinkable

Water covers most of our planet, but only about 3% of it is drinkable and hard to reach for many populations. Researchers are working on energy-efficient processes to separate freshwater from seawater. Mechanical engineer Alaa Adel Ibrahim’s research focuses on a process called membrane distillation, a newer technique that uses heat and special filters.

Engineering Innovations – Episode 1 with Sona Salehian Ghamsari

Did you know that half of the water we use for drinking and irrigation comes from underneath the earth? In this video, Doctoral researcher Sona Salehian Ghamsari explores how satellite data and computer models work together to uncover the hidden world of underground water.

Engineering Innovations – Episode 2 with Ghada Ben Othman

In this video doctoral researcher Ghada Ben Othman showcases how AI models can enhance data collection in clinical environments by addressing challenges such as sensor disconnections and noisy or sparse data.

Engineering Innovations – Episode 3 with Fernanda Muniz Sacco

In this video doctoral researcher Fernanda Muniz Sacco presents a nature-based solution (NBS) to remove personal care products (PCPs) from greywater (GW) as a decentralised solution for wastewater treatment. In addition, by doing so, potable water can be saved by recycling water in sustainable buildings for non-drinking purposes.

Engineering Innovations – Episode 4 with Anna Tokareva

In this video doctoral researcher Anna Tokareva explores the potential to reduce CO2 emissions in concrete production by incorporating demolition waste, while also enhancing the material’s durability.

Engineering Innovations – Episode 5 with Laura Weiter

In this video, doctoral researcher Laura Weiter highlights the different classifications of water filtration and demonstrates a filter modification that is designed to filter microplastics out of the water more efficiently.

Engineering Innovations – Episode 6 with Damian Mingo Ndiwago

In this video, doctoral researcher Damian Mingo Ndiwago explores how to choose the best model to forecast severe hydrological events like floods.

Mathematical Careers Day: Discovering mathematical careers

The 8xav¸£Àûµ¼º½ of Luxembourg organises each year the mathematical careers day. It is a great opportunity for students to get an idea of the variety of jobs and exchange with alumni and potential recruiters.

A round table with mathematicians working now in administration, education, finance, industry or research enables to exchange about the skills needed, the job market and to give advice to future graduates.

    • Numeral coins

For the bases 2,3,5 and 10 we have produced numeral coins that allow to represent all numbers up to 100.
Moreover, we have made an interactive website to play with numeral coins.

    • The foldable half-meter

The foldable half-meter, usually sold as keychain, is very easy to manipulate (for all ages, 4 years onwards).

    Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS)

Technique to characterize the nanoscale microstructure of a wide range of materials such as nanoparticles, ferrofluids, polymers, and liquid crystals. Experiments can be carried out under different sample environments, such as temperature, magnetic field, or shear stress.
SAXS provides information on the particle size and shape, on the particle-size distribution, and on the interactions between the particles.
Used by several groups in the Physics and Materials Science Department and available to external partners.

Two-dimensional SAXS data of a silver behenate sample featuring several Debye-Scherrer diffraction rings.

SAXS data of a nanocrystalline soft magnetic alloy. From the peak position, we estimate an average particle separation of about 30 nm.
