On 13 October, the 8xav福利导航 of Luxembourg organised its 5th edition of the Mathematical Careers Day on Belval campus.
Around 80 participants including students and professors gathered to learn from alumni鈥檚 and exchange about the variety of job positions open for mathematicians in Luxembourg and abroad.
Keith Amoss, Career Coach and member of the People and Leadership Group of the British Chamber of Commerce was moderating the event.
Alumni鈥檚 discussed their studying path as well as their current career and gave their insight on the job market of today. The roundtable of alumni鈥檚 was composed of: Luca Notarnicola, Teacher at Lyc茅e Michel Rodange, Monika Zlopasa, Investment Risk Manager at UBS Fund Management, Yvik Swan, Professor at the Universit茅 Libre de Bruxelles, David Gasperini, Research Engineer at Arcelor Mittal and Nika Margeta, Manager at Amazon.
Types of questions they answered from the public were for example: How much coding to you need in your everyday job as an engineer? Which mathematical concept do you use the most in your job? How do you get a job and how to apply? Do you need to network?
Lara Suys, a master student in mathematics said: 鈥I found this year’s math careers day really interesting. I had the opportunity to talk to a lot of alumni. It helped me make contacts for my master’s thesis”.
After the event, participants were able to meet the experts and organisers around a friendly drink to continue the discussions.
Spuerkeess, AXA, Luxembourg Space Agency and the Luxembourg Institute of Health were being represented by alumni or colleagues.
鈥Every year, we set up our Mathematical Careers Day differently. This year, we chose to invite our alumni as experts. It worked marvelously: students and alumni mingled from the beginning, creating many exchanges. This was the intended outcome and we are very happy with it鈥 said Prof. Gabor Wiese full Professor in Mathematics.
Due to its success, the next edition is already scheduled on 11 October 2024.
