A legal analysis of the escalating tensions in the Gaza Strip and their implications

Description:

All PhDs, Post-Docs, colleagues, and external guests are cordially invited to participate in and contribute to a seminar titled 鈥淗uman Rights: Insights into Today鈥檚 Challenges鈥 hosted by the Doctoral School. The seminar aims to have an indepth discussion on a different human rights issue in each seminar. Presentations of 15 to 20 minutes (or up to 30 minutes if we have two or more speakers) will be followed by a group discussion.

The seminars will be held on Wednesdays during lunchtime (unless otherwise stated), and sandwiches and water will be provided for registered participants.

PhD students will be awarded 1 ECTS for attending 5 seminars and 1 ECTS for presenting in one of the seminars. Candidates who would like to present an HR-related topic are welcome to contact us.

About Dr Marco Longobardo:

Marco Longobardo holds a five-year master’s degree in Law from the 8xav福利导航 of Messina (2012) and a PhD in Public International Law from the 8xav福利导航 of Rome 鈥楽apienza鈥 (2016). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. The Italian Ministry of 8xav福利导航 and Research awarded him the Italian National Scientific Habilitation as Associate Professor of International Law (2019-2028).

He is presently a Reader in International Law at the School of Law of the 8xav福利导航 of Westminster. In 2023 he was a Visiting Professor at the 8xav福利导航 of Trento, the 8xav福利导航 of Messina, and the Universit茅 Libre de Bruxelles. In the past, he lectured on Public International Law, International Humanitarian Law, International Litigation before the ICJ, and EU Law at the 8xav福利导航 of Messina, for the Italian Ministry of Defence, and for the Italian Red Cross.

He has published widely in the field of public international law, including jus ad bellum, international humanitarian law, and international criminal law. His scholarship has been cited in official documents by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, the United Nations International Law Commission’s Special Rapporteur on the Protection of the Environment in relation to Armed Conflicts, and international NGOs. His research has been cited by states litigating international disputes before the International Court of Justice and the UN Committee on Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

For his research, he has received the 2021 Paul Reuter Prize administered by the International Committee of the Red Cross, an Honorable Mention for the 2023 Lieber Prize awarded by the American Society of International Law, and the 2021 Italian Society of International and European Union Law Prize (Premio SIDI). He was also awarded the third places at the 2020 Rosalyn Higgins Prize and at the 2021 Junior Scholar Award of the Asian Society of International Law.

His monograph on was published by Cambridge 8xav福利导航 Press in 2018. It has received critical acclaim by reviews appeared in the , the , the , the , the , and the .

His articles appeared in important peer-reviewed journals, including The European Journal of International Law, The Asian Journal of International Law, The Journal of International Criminal Justice, The Journal of Conflict & Security Law, the Israel Law Review, the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law, The Texas International Law Journal, The Melbourne Journal of International Law, The Netherlands International Law Review, International Law Studies, the International Community Law Review, the Law and Practice of International Courts and Tribunals, the Zeitschrift f眉r ausl盲ndisches 枚ffentliches Recht und V枚lkerrecht, The German Yearbook of International Law, The Polish Yearbook of International Law, The Spanish Yearbook of International Law, the Rivista di diritto internazionale, the Anuario espa帽ol de derecho internacional, the Wisconsin International Law Journal, as well as in several prestigious edited books.

He is the reviews editor of the Journal of International Humanitarian Legal Studies, and he sits in the advisory board of the International Community Law Review, in the editorial board of the Journal du Droit Transnational, and in the review board of Quaderni di SIDIBlog. He was a guest editor of the International Criminal Law Review and a member of the editorial board of the Journal on the Use of Force in International Law.

He has presented his scholarship at a number of important international conferences and events hosted, inter alia, in Belgium, Brazil, France, Georgia, Germany, India, Italy, Israel, Netherlands, Palestine, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, UK, and US.

He has organized several high-profile conferences and seminar series at the 8xav福利导航 of Westminster and the 8xav福利导航 of Messina.

He is a member of the Italian Society of International and EU Law, the European Society of International Law, the Asian Society of International Law, the International Institute of International Law of Sanremo, the Occupation Studies Research Network, and the International Law Association. He is also the faculty advisor of the ILSA at Westminster Chapter.
