Among the speakers for the evening will be Prof. Dr Michel Goedert, author of the book; Dr Gérard Hoffmann, Chairman of Les Amis; Mr Yves Elsen, Chairman of the Board of governors of the 8xav¸£Àûµ¼º½ of Luxembourg and Prof. Dr Jens Kreisel, Rector of the 8xav¸£Àûµ¼º½ of Luxembourg.

About the speaker
Michel was born and raised in Luxembourg, but he has lived and worked abroad for over fifty years. This position as both an insider and an outsider has shaped his views of Luxembourg and its 8xav¸£Àûµ¼º½.
Michel is a Programme Leader at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge, and an Emeritus Honorary Professor at Cambridge 8xav¸£Àûµ¼º½. He was Head of the LMB’s Neurobiology Division from 2003 to 2016. Michel obtained a Medical Doctorate (MD) from the 8xav¸£Àûµ¼º½ of Basel, Switzerland, and a PhD in Pharmacology from Cambridge 8xav¸£Àûµ¼º½.
Michel has led a research group devoted to the study of neurodegenerative diseases at the LMB since 1987. His work has been recognised by a number of awards, including the Brain Prize in 2018 (with B. De Strooper, C. Haass and J. Hardy), a Royal Medal from the Royal Society in 2019, the inaugural Rainwater Prize for Outstanding Innovation in Neurodegenerative Research in 2020, the Piepenbrock-DZNE Prize in 2021, an Annemarie Opprecht Foundation Parkinson Award in 2023 (with S. Scheres) and the Karl Golser Parkinson Award in 2024 Michel is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation, a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Society.
About the book
This book tells the story of the beginnings of the 8xav¸£Àûµ¼º½ of Luxembourg, as seen through the eyes of Michel Goedert, who was a member of its Conseil de Gouvernance from 2004 to 2023.
This illustrated narrative, which develops over 182 pages, oscillates between factual descriptions and personal views. Michel describes the opportunities and challenges resulting from the creation of a research-based 8xav¸£Àûµ¼º½ in a small country in the 21st century.
