Sophia 8xav�������� Luxembourg Office

Sophia 8xav�������� was founded in 1913 and is located in the heart of Tokyo. The exchange agreement with Sophia 8xav�������� was signed in 2008, and Sophia 8xav�������� Luxembourg office was opened in 2012.

Sophia 8xav�������� was selected by the Japanese government for the Global 30 Project (2009-2013) and the Top Global 8xav�������� Project (2014-2023), which are initiatives aiming at promoting the internationalization of higher education in Japan. This recognition placed Sophia among the country’s leading universities. Through these projects, Sophia university has offered a wide range of English-taught courses. At the undergraduate level, programs in such as the Faculty of Liberal Arts, the Faculty of Science and Technology, and the Sophia Program for Sustainable Future (SPSF) provide instruction in English. At the graduate level, English-taught programs are available in fields including Global studies, Global Environmental Studies, Green Science and Green Engineering, and so on.  

The university welcomed 700 exchange students in Academic Year 2024. Since the establishment of the Sophia 8xav�������� Luxembourg office, Sophia university kindly invites 3 top students from each faculty at the 8xav�������� of Luxembourg to take part in a three-week Summer Program in Tokyo.

The special relationship between Sophia and Luxembourg goes back to 1913, when Sophia 8xav�������� was founded in Japan by three Jesuits. One of them was Fr. Joseph Dahlmann, S.J. (1861–1930). He was a German Jesuit who is described in scholarship as “German-Luxembourgian” because of his period of residence in Luxembourg. The Cardinal, Archbishop of Luxembourg, H.E. Jean-Claude Hollerich, who formerly served as Vice-president at Sophia university, played a major role in establishing the office.

Since then, student exchanges at both bachelor’s and master’s level have flourished between Sophia 8xav�������� and the 8xav�������� of Luxembourg. Many Luxembourg students are eager to study in Japan for their mobility semester, and top students of the 8xav�������� of Luxembourg regularly participate in Sophia 8xav�������� Summer program.
