    Research methods

Our multi-disciplinary research is both qualitative and quantitative, usually involving strong analytical and modelling skills while leveraging data analytics and empirical/statistical expertise. It is quantitative and analytical-oriented. This covers methods like stochastic modelling, game theory, discrete optimisation and data analytics. Furthermore, we use explorative methods to uncover innovative topics, e.g. management surveys, roundtables.
We take new data-driven approaches on interdisciplinary collaboration to exploit the full potential, e.g. between IT, statistics and supply chain.
We strive to build an understanding of how to manage and improve the performance of supply chains through better decision-making and coordination. We want to contribute to more robust, sustainable, resilient decision-making and execution of logistics and supply chain management. We are inspired by industry collaboration and strive to apply our methods and findings in real world applications.

Our research interests at a glance

Our interests are organised into a set of areas that reflect current activities and their development within clinical settings. Together, they provide a snapshot of ongoing activities.

        Medical education and pedagogical innovation

Research in this area focuses on the design and evaluation of medical curricula, with particular emphasis on innovative teaching and mentorship methods, simulation-based learning, the integration of digital technologies and the development of patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE). Activities explore how to better align medical training with clinical practice, strengthen competency-based education, and support learners’ engagement and well-being.

        Oncology and translational hematology

Research in this area focuses on hemato-oncology, with particular emphasis on lymphoid malignancies and the evolving landscape of immunotherapies including cellular therapies. Activities are grounded in clinical practice and span a broad spectrum of care, from the exploration of innovative therapeutic strategies, the modulation of immunotherapies through adjunctive strategies to supportive care and survivorship. This work contributes to the integration of emerging treatments into clinical care and supports the connection between medical practice and research to improve outcomes and quality of life for patients with hematological cancers.

        Critical care medicine

Research focuses on intensive care and emergency medicine, particularly post–cardiac arrest care. Activities include collaborative participation in clinical studies with a focus on the investigation of molecular changes induced by cardiac arrest. The overarching goal is to improve patient outcomes following cardiovascular events, which currently remain poor.

        Infectious diseases and post-viral syndromes

This area includes research on infectious diseases and their long-term consequences, with a current focus on Long COVID. Work aims to better understand disease mechanisms, patient trajectories, and recovery patterns, contributing to improved clinical management and follow-up care.

        Primary care and community-based research

Emerging research activities focus on strengthening research in general practice and community-based settings. This includes the development of studies in primary care, with an emphasis on patient-centred approaches and strengthening the interface between community and hospital care.

        Advancing medicine through research

Medical research at the Department of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (DHML) is grounded in an integrated approach that connects clinical practice, scientific inquiry, and medical education. Within a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment, research activities contribute to advancing knowledge and patient care while supporting the continuous development of healthcare professionals.

        Our practice-based research environment

Much of our work is led by clinicians and anchored in clinical practice, where research questions arise directly from patient care and are taken forward within the university setting. This creates a direct relationship between clinical experience and scientific work, allowing our researchers to address the most pressing challenges in healthcare.

Within this context, research emerges from a variety of clinical questions, teaching needs, and evolving practices rather than a predefined thematic structure. This supports a research environment that accommodates both established areas of work and emerging initiatives, while remaining closely connected to care settings. Situated in Luxembourg, at the crossroads of European healthcare systems, our work is also embedded in cross-border clinical and academic collaborations.

The three research pillars of LUMIRE

The LUMIRE research group organises its work around three complementary pillars that capture the core dimensions of midwifery’s role as a profession, an academic discipline, and a contributor to public health. These pillars guide our scientific priorities, research methods, and collaborations.

          Interdisciplinary pedagogy and interprofessional collaboration
We study how midwifery is taught and how learning is strengthened through collaboration across healthcare professions. Our work centres on innovative teaching approaches, the integration of evidence-based knowledge into curricula, and the continual reevaluation of the competencies needed for contemporary practice. A key area of interest is how midwives learn and work alongside other professionals and how these interactions shape communication, training quality, and impact health outcomes.

          Midwifery practice and professional autonomy
Midwives have a unique role in healthcare. Their independence ensures safe, high-quality care throughout the perinatal journey—from conception to birth and beyond. They support mothers and babies, including feeding choices, and help prevent health problems while identifying social or emotional challenges early, such as domestic violence, addiction or other psychosocial risks. Our research examines the scope of midwives’ professional competencies and the organisational structures that enable or limit autonomous practice. We contribute to discussions on regulation and policy with a view to strengthening the visibility and recognition of midwifery in Luxembourg, the European Union and internationally.

Physiology and salutogenesis in maternal and perinatal health
This pillar explores the physiological processes of pregnancy, labour, and childbirth, and the factors that ensure positive health outcomes during these periods for the mother, newborn and family unit. The goal is to strengthen evidence-based practices that respect physiological birth, support healthy family transitions, promote health and well-being and support public health initiatives.

Together, these three pillars create a coherent framework for research that advances midwifery as a knowledge-rich, scientifically grounded, and socially relevant field.
