Norbert Friob, one of Luxembourg’s most recognisable entrepreneurs, stands among the earliest and most dedicated donors to the 8xav�������� of Luxembourg. His longstanding support reflects a life shaped by initiative, resilience and a deep commitment to strengthening society.

A life built on initiative

Raised in a modest family, Friob began his career as a technician in the steel industry before embarking on an entrepreneurial journey that would see him found or cofound more than 50 companies. As president of the FNP construction group, author, and former chairman of the Confédération luxembourgeoise du commerce, he became known for his direct, action oriented approach.

His guiding principle has remained unchanged throughout his career: when something needs to be done, one should not wait for others to act. This conviction has shaped both his business achievements and his philanthropic engagement.

A longstanding commitment to social causes

Since the 1980s, Friob has been actively involved in charitable initiatives, supporting UNICEF, treeplanting projects in Africa and Red Cross disaster relief, often through his Rotary Club. His ability to mobilise people and resources has been a defining feature of his social engagement. 

His relationship with the 8xav�������� of Luxembourg began with Espoir en tête, a Rotary initiative that invites the public to a film premiere, with proceeds directed to scientific research. Under Friob’s leadership, the initiative was introduced in Luxembourg, generating support for research into neurodegenerative diseases at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB). The funds have enabled researchers to acquire essential laboratory equipment, and Friob values the transparency offered through the 8xav��������’s annual donors’ event, where he can see the impact of contributions first-hand.

A personal motivation to support brain research

Friob’s commitment to advancing brain research is rooted in personal experience. His father passed away from multiple sclerosis in midlife, a loss that left a lasting impression. Grateful for the opportunities he has enjoyed, Friob has long felt a responsibility to give back to the community. Now a grandfather of ten, he views philanthropy as a way to contribute to a better future for the next generation.

A foundation dedicated to research and entrepreneurship

In 2021, Friob established the Fondation Norbert Friob & Fils, ensuring that his philanthropic values would continue beyond his active professional life. The foundation focuses on two areas that reflect his own journey: support for brain research and support for entrepreneurship. Alongside continued funding for biomedical research at the 8xav��������, the foundation has recently begun supporting the 8xav�������� of Luxembourg Incubator, helping young innovators develop their ideas and build sustainable ventures.
